UI loses N10 bn property to Ibadan flood

BADAN—THE University of Ibadan lost property estimated at N10billion to the flood disaster that ravaged Ibadan city last Friday. The flood claimed several lives and property in the ancient city. While lamenting the havoc caused the premier university in the country, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Isaac Adewole, in a statement, said the loss was so much that the management had appealed to the Federal Government for assistance. He said the appeal for financial aid did not leave out the state government and other corporate bodies in the society Prof. Adewole said: “There is no way we can handle this alone. For us to return to our form, we certainly need government’s assistance because this devastation is quite massive”. Breaking down the losses, he said: “The major calamity suffered by the university include the washing away of the Fish Farm with different species of fish valued at about N300 million, over flooding of the Zoological Garden, leading to the death of animals, extensive damage of the Teaching and Research Farm and the destruction of books estimated to the tune of N2billion. ”Besides, many gigantic buildings, laboratories and expensive equipment were destroyed by the flood which equally pulled down the university fence and 13 electricity poles, thereby compounding the hitherto poor electricity supply to the institution.” The Vice Chancellor added that disaster also affected tudents living at the Obafemi Awolowo Hall, especially those in ground floor and topmost floor. Corroborating Prof Adewole, Head of Department of Fishery, Dr Bamidele Omitoye, said that special species of fish such as claias gariepinus, heterobranchus bidorsalis, oreochromis niloticus and parachana obscura were swept away. Libya: Col Gaddafi 'offers talks on power transfer'

Fugitive Libyan leader Col Muammar Gaddafi is ready to begin talks to transfer power, his spokesman has said. Moussa Ibrahim reportedly said the toppled leader's son Saadi would lead the talks. The rebels say they will not negotiate until he surrenders. Meanwhile, desperately-needed fuel and water supplies are expected to arrive in the Libyan capital Tripoli later. More than 50 charred bodies have been found in a burnt-out warehouse in the south of the capital. Residents of the district of Salah al-Din said they were civilians who had been executed on Tuesday by members of a brigade commanded by Col Gaddafi's son, Khamis, before they abandoned a nearby military base. Human Rights Watch says it has evidence that pro-Gaddafi forces killed at least 17 prisoners and carried out "suspected arbitrary executions of dozens of civilians, including professionals" in the days before Tripoli fell to the rebels. On Friday, more than 200 decomposing bodies were found at an abandoned hospital in the capital's Abu Salim district. Doctors and nurses fled because of the fighting and many injured patients were left to die. 'Sea of blood' The Associated Press news agency in New York reported that it had received a call from Col Gaddafi's spokesman Moussa Ibrahim, who said the former leader was still in Libya although he did not specify where. Mr Ibrahim, whom AP says it identified by his voice, said Col Gaddafi was offering to negotiate with the rebels to form a transitional government. Those negotations would be led by Col Gaddafi's son, Saadi, said Mr Ibrahim, who told AP he was still in Tripoli and had seen the former leader on Friday. Early this week, CNN reported it had been in email contact with Saadi Gaddafi who confirmed his desire to negotiate a ceasefire. "I will try to save my city Tripoli and 2 millions of people living there... otherwise Tripoli will be lost forever like Somalia," he wrote. Without a cease-fire, Mr Gaddafi added, "Soon it will be a sea of blood." An official in the rebel's National Transitional Council (NTC) told Reuters news agency that they did not know where Col Gaddafi was and no negotiations were taking place with him. "If he wants to surrender, then we will negotiate and we will capture him," said Ali Tarhouni, the rebel official in charge of oil and financial matters. UK Foreign Secretary William Hague described Colonel Gaddafi's offer as "delusional", saying the NTC is already in charge of the country. The focus has now moved to the urgent humanitarian situation in Tripoli. The opposition says it will start distributing 30,000 tonnes of petrol on Sunday, and provide cooking gas within the next 48 hours. A ship carrying fresh water and diesel for the power stations is due to dock in the next couple of days.

Rebels appeal for Gaddafi capture

Libyan rebels have announced an amnesty for anyone within Col Muammar Gaddafi's "inner circle" who captures or kills him, and a $1.7m (£1m) reward. Col Gaddafi's whereabouts are unknown, though rebels have said they think he is still in or around Tripoli. Rebels fighters have fought running battles in the capital, where pockets of pro-Gaddafi resistance remain. The fugitive leader has vowed in an audio message to fight until victory or martyrdom. His sprawling Bab al-Aziziya compound was overrun on Tuesday, though firefights within the complex have continued. Col Gaddafi's forces are still firmly in control of his birthplace - the strategic coastal city of Sirte - as well as several key bases in southern Libya.

Was the honeymoon shark victim killed by a cover-up? Three other attacks, fishermen's bait lured sharks to the bay but still this couple were told there was no dange

An achingly beautiful arc of powder-white sand framed by giant boulders and luxuriant palm fronds, Anse Lazio beach graces the cover of upmarket travel brochures, attracting affluent holidaymakers to the Seychelles. Last Tuesday afternoon, therefore, when the islands’ government learnt that a British honeymooner had been savaged by a shark while snorkelling at this iconic location — the second fatal attack there inside a fortnight — a damage-limitation exercise quickly swung into place.
Speaking on the BBC’s Today programme, tourist chief Alain St Ange gave a grimly passable impression of Larry Vaughn — the embattled seaside town mayor in the Jaws movie — as he played down the danger to the 180,000 tourists who visit the Seychelles each year. Tragedy: Smiling newlyweds Ian Redmond 30, and Gemma Houghton 27 before the shark attack that killed Mr Redmond Risibly describing the rogue predator as a ‘foreign shark’ (as if sea creatures have nationalities), he dismissed the attacks as a freak occurrence, and claimed software developer Ian Redmond, 30, from Lancashire, and Frenchman Nicolas Virolle, who died on August 1, were the only victims in the islands since 1963. My investigation into this ghastly episode suggests a very different story, however. Indeed, though Mr Redmond’s grieving widow, Gemma, was admirably reluctant to criticise the Seychelles authorities this week, after making extensive inquiries into his death I am convinced it was entirely preventable.

Parents' shock as smiling baby girl is born with two front teeth

A newborn baby girl shocked her parents with her first smile minutes after she was born - because she had two fully formed front teeth. Normally, the first teeth don't come through until the infant is aged between six months and one year. But little Summer Whelan was born with two pearly white incisors in her lower gums.

Did rock-throwing teenage girl's 'beating' by police spark London riots? Pictures that show how Tottenham turned into a war zone

Witnesses said that a peaceful vigil for Mark Duggan (pictured, left), who was shot dead by police on Thursday, turned ugly after a 16-year-old was 'attacked' by a number of officers. Mr Duggan's family today appealed for calm after a night in which vehicles were burnt to ashes and many buildings wrecked. Early tonight, though, neighbouring Enfield was the scene of a small scale outbreak of violence erupted in what appears to be copycat rioting.

164 Escape Death in Caribbean Airline Crash

A jet carrying 163 people broke in half as it crash-landed in the South American country of Guyana on July 30th. Incredibly, nobody was killed and only a few passengers were injured after the Caribbean Airlines Boeing 737-800 from New York overshot the runway at Georgetown’s Cheddi Jagan airport in wet weather...
It slid through a chain-link fence and barely missed a 200-foot ravine. Had it fallen into the ravine it would have almost certainly killed crew and passengers. The crash happened just after midnight local time as it arrived from the Caribbean island of Trinidad, where it had made a stop before continuing its flight to Georgetown. Caribbean Airlines said it did not know the cause of the accident, which happened during good visibility and light rain. Investigators from the U.S. and Guyana were sent to retrieve the black box. - NY Times

Female babysitter, 20, 'got drunk and had sex with 14-year-old she was hired to look after'

A female babysitter had sex with a 14-year-old she was hired to look after having plied him with alcohol, it has been reported. Loni Bouchard, from Clinton, Connecticut, was taken into custody after the young boy's family found out about the alleged affair. The 20-year-old now faces charges that she sexually assaulted the boy last month after illegally buying him alcohol. Authorities said they obtained a warrant after a complaint from a family member of the teenager. She then turned herself in to Southington police on Friday morning. Sergeant Lowell DePalma said the victim knew the babysitter before the alleged assault took place.

Why nipples stimulate the same area of the female brain as genitals do

When women’s nipples are stimulated the sensation travels to the same part of the brain as when their genitals are aroused, a study has found. Brain scans of women who made themselves aroused showed that the nipples hit the same spot as the vagina and clitoris.
Regardless of where the stimulation occurred on their body, the same area at the top of the brain ‘lit up’, the images show. The research confirms for the first time what many women have experienced themselves, even if men don’t believe it - that their nipples can be an erogenous zone too.
A team from Rutgers University in the U.S. asked 11 non-pregnant women between 23 and 56 to stimulate themselves while they lay inside a brain scanner.

How 6 people died after eba meal

After what was supposed to have been a delicious family supper, eaten amidst hearty jokes and giggles, six members of the Umunna family in Uli, Anambra State, were found dead. Those that were found dead after the unfortunate meal were Mrs Caroline Umunna, Madam Lucy Obodoeke, Miss Modesta Umunna, Miss Uchenna Umunna, Master Chisom Okorie and Ozioma, their house maid. For Mr Charles Umunna, the head of the family, who is still in shock, penultimate Thursday night will remain green in his memory as a bitter reminder of the cruelty fate brought him. Umunna, a staff of Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN), Awka, whose wife, Caroline Umunna; two daughters, Uchenna, a first year student of Public Administration, Anambra State University and her sister who just finished School Certificate Examination and UTME; his in-law, Mrs. Lucy Obodoeke, who came for medical treatment; cousin, Chisom Okorie; and maid, Miss Ozioma Marcel; who joined the family three weeks earlier, were found mysteriously dead on Friday, it is a pathetic situation he is trying hard to comprehend. Possibly because of their trauma and excruciating grief, Umunna and his remaining three children two boys and one girl, have relocated to the house of the Catholic Priest of St. Gregory's Catho-lic Church, Eziama Uli, Rev. Fr. Joel Ibebuike. When the Nigerian Tribune encountered him in the sleepy village, Umunna, who was still enveloped in grief, was shedding tears, especially when he saw the pictures of his wife and children. According to Umunna, who responded to questions in an emotion-soaked voice, it was on Friday evening that his wife's cousin called him that she got to their house and there was no sign of any soul in the house. Then he asked the girl to check their shop, the girl said she had checked the shop but didn't find anybody there. Umunna said the girl told him that her inquiry revealed that the neighbours had not seen any member of the family throughout that day. He said he became agitated and called his wife. However, though the wife's hand-set was ringing, no one picked it. He became furious and was querying why his wife would always fail to pick her call. It was at that juncture, that he called his landlord to check his family members, and the landlord called back to tell him that the door of his house seemed to be locked from inside. The landlord's son called again to inform him that it appeared that there was no one inside his house. This, he said, was about 9p.m and it was raining heavily in Awka, so there was no way he could return that night. The following morning, being Saturday, he went to the village with his two other children, who were on holiday with him in Awka. He had already called his first son, Desmond, who is a Computer Science student at the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, to join him at home. Before he could reach home, the police had forced the door open and packed the six corpses into an ambulance for the purpose of depositing them in a mortuary. A demoralised Umunna disclosed that for the past 25 years, his family had lived in Eziama Uli, as he moved from one state to another on transfer in the course of his work, although he packed to the present place three months earlier. He also said that despite having lived long in that community, they had never had any misunderstanding with any member of the community. In fact the late wife was a teacher in Eziama Uli Community Primary School, and that accounted for his decision for the family to stay in that community. He said his wife had finished her Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) programme and was about to finish her Bachelor's degree in Education before the unfortunate incident. Three of Umunna's children are already in the higher institution, two at Anambra State University, Uli and one at the Federal Polytechnic, Oko. Umunna, who is a native of Eziama-Ubulu in Oru West Local Government Area of Imo State, could not say what could be responsible for this tragedy, whether it was food poisoning or the handiwork of enemies. The Anambra State Police Command and the Consumer Protection Council (CPC) have commenced investigations into the matter. The police had taken the leftover of the garri meal, believed to have been eaten by the family the previous night. The CPC, through its Zonal Director, South-East, Enugu, Mr. Sam Tamuno, had visited the family and taken sample of the food they ate on the fateful night to analyze its content. Tamuno, who signed the condolence register, was said to have promised to conduct investigation into the substances they ate, while the police are conducting autopsy on the corpses. Umunna said that he had handed over everything to God, but his greatest consolation would be to get to the root of the cause of the death of his family members who he vowed would not die un-avenged. Desmond, the first son of Mrs Caroline Umunna, who was battling to control his emotions as he was the only one consoling the father and siblings, lamented that he never knew he was going to lose his beloved ones in one instance and in that circumstance. He added that he had ominous signs that things were not well in the family but did not know the extent when his father called him in the early hours of Saturday to come home immediately. When he came home that Saturday, he could not believe what greeted his sight as his mother with whom he had a hearty telephone chat two days before, his aunt, two siblings and their house help were all stuffed in a waiting ambulance to be taken to the morgue. According to him, the police had to force the door open to take the corpses and the food they ate the previous night. He cried that currently the family was shattered and in need of urgent help, “we are in deep pain and the current situation is so financially tasking, we cannot cope alone. It is my passionate appeal that the state government comes to our aid at this time of our grief.” Some villagers, who spoke with the Nigerian Tribune on condition of anonymity, described the Umunna family as a humble and peace-loving family and wondered what could have been responsible for their unusual demise.
