Gerrard to miss start of season

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard is expected to be out until September because of a groin problem. Gerrard, 31, began a course of antibiotic treatment for an infection on Saturday and is expected to remain in hospital for several days. Groin surgery ended Gerrard's season in March but he had expected to be back for the start of the new campaign. The midfielder could also miss England's two Euro 2012 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Wales. Steven Gerrard Premier League appearances Continue reading the main story * 2010-11 - 21 of 38 (4 goals) * 2009-10 - 33 (9) * 2008-09 - 31 (16) * 2008-07 - 34 (11) * 2007-08 - 36 (7)
Gerrard missed his side's pre-season tour of Asia this month in order to try to regain full fitness for the start of the new season on 13 August, when Liverpool play Sunderland at Anfield. He will also miss Premier League fixtures against Arsenal and Bolton, with the trip to Stoke on 10 September a likely target date for his return. The England midfielder was already set to miss the international friendly with the Netherlands on 10 August but will now also be a doubt for the qualifiers away to Bulgaria on 2 September and at home to Wales four days later. Gerrard has been plagued by the problem for several years now and it restricted his effectiveness in the last campaign, when he played only 21 of 38 Premier League matches.

Islamist militia 'shot Libya rebel Abdel Fattah Younes'

An Islamist militia was behind the killing of Libyan rebel commander Gen Abdel Fattah Younes, who was shot dead on Thursday, a rebel minister has said.
Ali Tarhouni said Gen Younes was killed by members of the Obaida Ibn Jarrah Brigade, a group linked to the rebels. Gen Younes defected to the rebels in February after serving in the Libyan leadership since the 1969 coup which brought Col Muammar Gaddafi to power. Meanwhile Nato says it bombed Libyan state TV transmitters overnight. The Libyan Broadcasting Authority said three of its technicians were killed and 15 other people injured in the attack in the capital, Tripoli. The alliance said it had disabled three satellite transmission dishes through a "precision air strike". It said the operation was intended to stop "inflammatory broadcasts" by Col Gaddafi's government.

Brothers attack pilot after he boots them off plane

A pair of thuggish brothers brutally attacked an American Airlines pilot after he kicked one of them off a plane for being passed out drunk.
Jonathan and Luis Baez, both of Las Piedras, Puerto Rico, were arrested at Miami International airport on Wednesday night July27, for the assault, which left the pilot bruised and bloodied and delayed the San Francisco bound flight more than two hours. The scuffle started after a flight attendant noticed that Jonathan Baez, 27, had passed out without buckling his seat belt as the plane pulled away from the gate. The attendant tried to wake Baez, but he was groggy and appeared plastered on booze or high on drugs. After the attendant told the crew that Baez wouldn't buckle up, the pilot stopped taxiing and turned around, cops said. When Baez finally came to, the attendant told him he had to get off the plane. Luis Baez, 29, decided to follow his brother, and the two screamed obscenities at the pilot. "When you fly to San Juan, I will have you killed," one of the goons shouted, according to police. Crew members escorted the brothers off the plane, but Jonathan ran back, punched the pilot in the face and then punched a female flight attendant who tried to step in. Luis then joined in the vicious beatdown, and the two hoodlums chased the pilot into the terminal, cops said. Eventually, some passengers and crew members tackled the brothers and held them down until police arrived. The Miami-based pilot was cut up, bruised and shaken after the attack, police said. Another pilot showed up, and the 176 passengers and six crew members took off for San Francisco at around 11:30 p.m., two hours after the scheduled take off. Jonathan and Luis Baez were held at Miami-Dade county jail on $9,000 bond and $12,500 bond on assault and battery charges. Source: NYDaily News

Soulja Boy's 21st Birthday Gift To Self - $55 Million G5 Jet

From TMZ A member of Soulja's management team tells us ... the kid bought himself a G5 jet as a birthday present to himself this week. The jet cost $35 mil ... but that's just the beginning. We're told the birthday boy is dropping an additional $20 million to pimp out his ride with all sorts of cool stuff ... like 12 custom Italian leather seats, flat screen TVs, 4 liquor bars, a special travertine tiled floor, and Brazilian hardwood cabinets. We're told S.B. is also gutting the in-flight lavatory and replacing it with a giant, luxurious bathroom. Oh, he's also giving the jet a custom paint job, to include his logo. $55million? Is Soulja Boy even worth that much? Nigga please! This news is probably for entertainment purposes only...lol. Anyway, hope he puts some cash aside for when he's no longer relevant in music so he doesn't end up like MC Hammer some of the greats who are fighting bankruptcy

CAN president Oritsejafor replies Sultan of Sokoto, on Islamic Banking

Sultan of Sokoto: "Islamic banking has come to stay in Nigeria and there is no need to quarrel over the issue because we shall realize what we want. I want to assure you.” CAN president, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor's reply: “You know I respect the Sultan a great deal because he is a man who means well for the country just like some of us. We will continue to be friends because the only way this country can make appreciable progress is by stretching a hand of fellowship across the Niger and building blocks of unity for future generations. So, I thank him immensely for his eventual comments about the two controversial issues. However, I dare say that I was a bit surprised that the Sultan, who is respected across the country, failed to address the two cardinal issues involved in the controversial Islamic banking before he concluded that it has come to stay.” For the avoidance of doubt, “Christians in Nigeria are not against the Muslims as people have made the generality of Nigerians to believe. We are not against Muslims. In fact, it the Christians that have always been at the receiving end of every violence that has taken place in parts of the North. “Let it also be known that we are not against Islamic banking per se. What we have said thus far, is that there are two issues that the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, governor must address properly before the introduction of non-interest banking as against Islamic banking. “One, we have continued to frown at the way the CBN governor who is being paid by tax payers’ money is championing the course of Islamic banking in isolation of other non-interest banking. We are against Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi using state funds to promote Islamic banking as though that is the only form of non-interest banking. It is against the spirit of the Nigerian Constitution. “He should allow people who are interested in Islamic banking to use their money to sell their manifesto to Nigerians with a view to wooing them to accept that form of banking which is different from what they used to know,” he explained. “the other issue that my very good friend failed to address has to do with the guidelines the CBN governor had put in place for the issuance of licence for non-interest banking in the country which is different from that for Islamic banking. In every sector of the nation’s economy including the education sector, there are uniform guidelines for the registration or operating license. For instance, any Nigerian applying to the National Universities Commission, NUC, for licence to establish a university, irrespective of its leanings, is required to adhere to a uniform set of guidelines before its registration. There are no rules for Islamic university and another for a Christian university. “But the CBN governor has failed, thus far, to explain to the nation why he is putting up a different guideline for Islamic banking and another one for other forms of non-interest banking. This is in addition to a proposed establishment of a Shari’a Council of Experts to be based at the CBN to monitor the operations of the Islamic banking and we have asked; is this what operates in all the countries in the world where Islamic banking operates?” On the activities of Boko Haram, the CAN president also picked holes in the statement credited to the Sultan, who said the state of affairs in the North Eastern part of the country should not be blamed on Boko Haram, rather that the government should fish out those behind the violence. Oritsejafor, again thanked the Sultan for his position on the Boko Haram, saying “if the eminent citizen has superior information, he should avail the nation’s security apparatus with such information with a view to putting a stop to the daily massacre of innocent Nigerians in that part of the country, because every Nigerian is sick and tired of the continued violence in that region and the attendant effect on the nation’s economy. For the interest of peace in every part of the country, we must, as citizens contribute our own little quota to helping government at every level to reduce the army of unemployed youths in the country.” In conclusion, Pastor Oritsejafor said: “These are some of the issues, among others, that one would have expected the Sultan to address to assuage the nerves of those who are opposed to the issue of Islamic banking as well as the insecurity situation in Borno State that has left hundreds of innocent Nigerians dead while their means of livelihood destroyed.” According to him Nigeria is the only nation we, both Christians and Muslims, have and every effort must be made to salvage it together now for the benefit of generations yet. Saudi Arabia Beheads three Nigerians

Three Nigerians were yesterday beheaded in Saudi Arabia. They had been found guilty of robbing and murdering fellow Nigerian, Omar Mohammed Adam. This was announced by the Saudi Interior Ministry and publicised by the official SPA news agency.
Mohammed Ismail, Abdulqudus Adam and Mohammed Kabir Ali broke into the house of Omar Mohammed Adam where "they beat him and his wife, tied them down and strangled Omar to death," the statement said. Then they burgled their compatriot's home, it added. The beheadings in the western Red Sea city of Jeddah brings the number of executions in that country to 31 since January 1. On June 10, London-based watchdog Amnesty International called on Saudi Arabia to stop applying the death penalty, saying there had been a significant rise in the number of executions in the previous six weeks. According to Amnesty, 15 people were executed in May alone. In 2009, the number of executions was 67, compared to 102 the previous year. Rape, murder, apostasy, armed robbery and drug trafficking are all punishable by death under Saudi Arabia's strict interpretation of Islamic sharia law.

Mum 'killed kids and put them in boot'

A mum suffocated her two young children and placed their bodies in the boot of her car, a court heard yesterday.
Fiona Donnison, 45, allegedly killed Harry, three, and two-year-old Elise after her relationship with their dad broke down. She is accused of murdering them to hurt her ex in the most extreme way possible. She then allegedly wrapped the youngsters in holdalls.
Jurors were told she had moved out of the family home six months earlier without telling Paul. Christine Laing QC, prosecuting, said: "This is understandably a complex case particularly in relation to the motive. "We say that responsibility lies not as a result of any mental illness but we say as a result of her personality." She said Donnison, who was not married to Paul but had changed her name by deed poll, was a narcissist with an overdeveloped sense of self-importance and entitlement. The couple, who had met in 1999 when both were married to other people, had a strained relationship, the court heard. Donnison was also jealous and controlling of her partner and often exhibited highly manipulative behaviour, it was said. She had enjoyed a successful career in financial services in the City, but was made redundant in July 2009. It is alleged she moved out of the family home in Heathfield, East Sussex, with the children on September 1 after returning from a holiday to Ireland. She had left a note saying "for the sake of the children I feel I have no choice but to move out... I'm sorry, Fiona". Mrs Laing said the two children, described as "delightful, well-mannered and affectionate", were last seen alive on the afternoon of January 26 last year. It is believed they were likely to have been killed sometime that evening. Donnison denies two charges of murder.

Four teenage girls and a baby found dead in restaurant

Five girls were found dead this morning in Ikeja, Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria, after yesterday’s heavy rains forced them to sleep in a poorly ventilated room in their restaurant where they worked.
The corpses of the four teenage-girls and a baby-girl, aged between three months and 18 years, were discovered this morning inside the stuffy room on Allen Avenue in Ikeja. Neighbours told P.M.NEWS that the girls may have died of suffocation overnight in the room where they sought refuge after rains wreacked havoc in Lagos yesterday. Two other girls, who also slept in the same room, were still in critical condition at Bodet Hospital at Alausa in Ikeja, it was gathered. They were said to be responding to treatment. The five corpses were brought to Area F Police Station in Ikeja early today in a commuter bus. P.M.NEWS learnt that a mother and her three-month-old girl were among the dead. The victims, it was gathered, were brought sometime ago from neighbouring Benin Republic to work in a restaurant in Lagos. The restaurant owner, who was at the police station this morning, disclosed that she had brought them from Benin Republic to train them. The two other girls still battling for life at Bodet Hospital, our correspondent gathered, are Nigerians. The woman, walling at the station, disclosed that she had asked the girls to cook outside their restaurant yesterday and stay in the restaurant until the rains stopped. “My girls don’t usually sleep in the restaurant,” she said, “I did not know that they slept in the restaurant yesterday. I asked them to cook outside the restaurant when they phoned me and said that water had entered the restaurant.” “This morning, as I kept calling them, nobody was picking. I was worried and someone picked the call and told me that my girls are dead. I rushed here to confirm it. I can’t believe what I am seeing,” she lamented. A man, who claimed to be the brother of one of the dead girls, was weeping at the station this morning. Neighbours and friends who besieged the police station this morning wept and expressed shock. The five corpses were later taken to the Lagos State University Hospital, LASUTH.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (AP) —

NASA's final four shuttle astronauts boarded Atlantis for liftoff Friday on the last flight of the 30-year program, even as potential rainstorms threatened to delay the launch.
Forecasters stuck to their original 70 percent chance of bad weather, as the veteran crew climbed aboard the spacecraft. NASA was hopeful. "We do have a shot at this today," launch director Mike Leinbach assured his team. Commander Christopher Ferguson gave a thumbs up as he was strapped in after sunrise despite the still-iffy launch prospects. On his way to the spacecraft, Ferguson had jokingly beckoned for more applause, clapping his hands at one point. The astronauts posed for pictures before boarding. Atlantis holds a year's worth of supplies — more than 8,000 pounds — for the International Space Station. An estimated 750,000 people are expected to jam Cape Canaveral and surrounding towns for this final shuttle launch, reminiscent of the crowds that gathered for the Apollo moon shots. Among the expected VIPs: 14 members of Congress, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Adm. Mike Mullen, four members of the Kennedy family, two former NASA administrators, singers Jimmy Buffett and Gloria Estefan, and the first shuttle pilot of them all, Robert Crippen. By 6 a.m., cars and RV were packed into almost every available space along U.S. 1 in Titusville, with cameras already trained on the launch pad in the hazy clouds across the Indian River. Many had planted chairs and staked out viewing locations just feet from the water. Some were still cocooned in sleeping bags as the sun rose. Kenneth Cox, 25, an airport employee from Danville, Ind., joined three friends at the riverside. Hauling Lucky Charms, fixings for s'mores and a bottle of champagne to celebrate the launch, they slept off and on as the sun rose. "It's the closing chapter of 30 years," said Cox, who went to Space Camp when he was in the fifth grade and has been enamored with the shuttle program as long as he could remember. "I definitely think it's a somber attitude out here, because it's the last one," said Cox's friend, Simon Lin, 26, who works at Walt Disney World in Orlando. "It's brought so much to the tourist industry in Florida, and that's what we are. Closing it down, it's going to be sad."
In 2005, Loyola Jesuit College, Abuja Nigeria, lost 60 students in the Sosoliso flight crash. In total, 109 lives were lost in the crash.
Kechi Okwuchi was the only student and one of two people to survive the crash. She's since then undergone 75 surgeries. But she still needs help. She is scheduled to begin facial reconstructive surgeries in Boston this summer. In order to help her raise money for the surgeries, a Fundraiser dinner is being organized for Kechi. “A devastating plane crash, over 60% intensive burns, up to five weeks in medically-induced coma and over 75 surgeries to date have not hampered the spirit of our friend, Kechi Okwuchi. She may have been terribly disfigured by the accident but Kechi’s determination and hope to achieve her dreams regardless, inspire us each day. We would like to share her story so that it may inspire you too.”
After the crash, Kechi was immediately transfered to South Africa for urgent treatment. Since she had to relearn to perform muscle movements, physical therapy followed when Kechi was in a more stable condition. A NEW DAWN: FUNDRAISER FOR KECHI OKWUCHI You are cordially invited to a Fashion Show Dinner Fundraiser, themed, A New Dawn, which would be held on the 30th of July, 2011, in honour of and for the purpose of raising funds forsurgeries for our friend and heroine, Kechi Okwuchi. Girl, 10, bitten by shark in just three feet of water... and doctors have to pull tooth out of her leg

A ten-year-old girl nearly lost one of her legs when she was bitten by a shark -
in just three feet of water. The shark bit Cassidy twice, plunging its jaws in so deeply doctors had to remove one of its teeth from her leg. The terrifying attack happened on Topsail Beach, North Carolina, just one day after she and her family arrived from Pennsylvania on vacation. Cassidy was happily playing with her body board in the shallows, which are only about three-feet deep, when she suddenly felt something pulling on her leg. She told MyFox8: 'It didn't hurt at first. It pulled me down, and it hurt. I thought it was somebody messing around and then I found out that it wasn't.' It bit her once then let go, before coming back and biting her again Then her mother, Carolyn, suddenly noticed blood was swirling in the water. With the help of a friend, Mrs Cartwright raced down to the sea to rescue her daughter. She said: 'When we pulled her out of the water, her leg was just wide open and it was just a lot of blood.' Paramedics airlifted Cassidy to hospital, where doctors found a shark tooth buried deep in her leg. The predator tore through several tendons, including the Achilles. Doctors at the New Hanover Regional Medical Center told Mrs Cartwright it was the worst bite they had ever seen. She said: 'I thought for sure there wasn't any way they were going to be able to put it back together.' She said she had no idea there were sharks in the sea off Tosail Beach. 'Nobody ever told me. Had I known, I wouldn't have put her in the water,' she said. Steve Foster, manager of North Topsail Beach, said: 'I think the one thing that people don't understand is is that there are sharks in the water. 'That's where they live, but people are not one of the main things they want to go after. But as far as response, I think we responded appropriately in this situation.'

Tears for girl, 13, crushed to death by a falling branch as she sat on park bench

A schoolgirl has been killed by a falling branch as she chatted with friends on a park bench.
Sophie Howard, 13, was sitting in the park when the group heard a crack ‘like thunder’. But although one of her friends was able to warn others to move, Sophie could not get away in time and was crushed by the 15ft branch. Two off-duty doctors from a nearby GP practice ran to Middletons Road recreation ground in Peterborough, just half a mile from Sophie’s home, to help her, along with paramedics. The teenager’s parents Martin, 49, and Laura, were called to the scene, according to a witness. ‘The mother fell on the floor in despair. The doctors tried to resuscitate Sophie for at least 20 minutes. ‘I heard she was sat on the bench with some friends. They heard a loud noise, like thunder, and one told the others to move, but Sophie couldn’t move fast enough.’ The teenager was later pronounced dead in hospital. Sophie, who has a twin brother, Elliott, was a pupil at Sawtry Community College, in Huntingdon. She was off school on Thursday afternoon, when the accident happened, as the teachers’ strike over pensions meant lessons were cancelled. Yesterday, her family said in a statement: ‘Sophie was a beautiful girl who had so many friends and we will miss her with all our heart. ‘She was enthusiastic at school and liked English. She loved music, especially JLS and Jessie J. ‘She was an excellent runner and enjoyed running the Race For Life for charity. ‘She was a typical girlie girl and loved socialising, make-up and fashion. Her friends were very important to her. Sophie’s twin brother is also suffering greatly.’ 'We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our friends and family for their support at this difficult time. Sophie has a twin brother who is also suffering greatly. 'Our beloved daughter's death was a tragic incident, which occurred only 24 hours ago, and we do not want it to be connected to any other events. 'We politely ask that our privacy be respected at this time and we will not be issuing anything further

La Verde may have shocked the two-time global kings with
a 6-1 rout in 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ qualifying, but that was at high altitude. Here, there could be no excuses as Edivaldo Rojas gave the Bolivians a deserved whiff of a first-ever win on Argentinian soil after 11 losses, before Sergio Aguero rescued a point with a crisp late volley. "They put men behind the ball, parked the bus and we could not find a way through," said Messi, who despite his heroics with Barcelona in scoring over 50 goals last season has never quite reached the same heights when he has donned the Albiceleste shirt. "It's not what we were hoping for and we are sad. Now we know the matches we have to come in the group (against Colombia and Costa Rica) are ones we just have to win."

Raw Money in the Bank Ladder Match

At WWE Money in the Bank, Rey Mysterio, Kofi Kingston, Alex Riley,
Evan Bourne, Alberto Del Rio, The Miz, R-Truth and Jack Swagger have the chance to attain a contract granting them a World Championship opportunity at any time over the next year. The only catch? That contract is inside a briefcase hanging 20 feet above the ring. To get it, one of these Superstars will have to survive a Ladder Match as treacherous and brutal as any bout in sports-entertainment. Since its introduction at WrestleMania 21 in 2005, the Money in the Bank Ladder Match has proven to be a star-maker. Top Superstars like Edge and CM Punk grabbed their first World Titles after winning the bout and announced themselves to the WWE Universe as champions that deserved to be watched. Over the past six years, every one of the six competitors like Punk and Edge who “cashed in” their title match contract walked away with the championship in their hands. For competitors like Riley, Kingston, Bourne, Truth and Del Rio, winning this bout would put them in the perfect position to capture their first World Titles. Each of these men have an opening to make the same major breakthrough that The Rated-R Superstar did in 2005, so expect these warriors to pull out all the stops — by pure athleticism or sheer cunning, if need be — when they enter the Allstate Arena on July 17. For Superstars like Mysterio, Miz and Swagger, the Money in the Bank Ladder Match presents an opportunity to get back on top of the mountain. All three competitors have held a World Title in the past and both The Awesome One and The All-American American won Money in the Bank Ladder Matches in 2010. These former winners will look to duplicate the shrewd success of Punk and Edge — both of whom triumphantly cashed in on two separate occasions. Meanwhile, The Master of the 619, competing for the first time in this dangerous environment, will attempt to overcome the odds — something he is better at than any other competitor in WWE. On July 17, the dreams of one of these eight Superstars will come true — but it will be a nightmare for them to make it happen. They will strive for WWE’s apex, but will literally need to climb their way there. Witness all the grit and glory for yourself at WWE Money in the Bank, only on pay-per-view.
